Born in 1968 in
Macau / China of an artistic family, while describing herself as a
painter with roots in Chinese traditional painting, Canal has won
international recognition for her unique motifs of blending the
ancient and new elements. Most of Canal’s works are inspired by
Chinese ancient philosophies, poems, nature and seasons.
At the time other
children her age were picking up crayons, Canal’s father taught her
the fundamentals of traditional Chinese ink brush painting. Though
Canal was receiving intensive training painting course for three
years at the Fine Art Academy of Guangzhou, one of the top Fine Art
Colleges in China and later on studying Modern Graphic Art in Hong
Kong University, Canal’s father’s teaching has remained the
strongest influence in her journey to find artistic expression.
Another major factor that has left strong mark in Canal’s work is
the very special experience of having lived in numerous different
countries in the last 15 years. Consciously and subconsciously,
cultural experiences from the Orient to Europe, Africa & Scandinavia
permeate her later works.
As the artist said
the process of painting is like magic, it motivates and invigorates
her with boundless energy. When looking at Canal’s paintings, we can
feel the immense range of ancient philosophical world she is
portraying where love, joy and freedom meet in harmony.
All elements in
Canal’s paintings, be it the main object or a small detail, are
painstakingly worked on with equal devotion. She paints on multiple
layers of rice paper with acrylic, ink, Chinese pigment and then
incorporates these together by using mixed medium to derive the
sense of depth on canvas.
Canal has enjoyed
considerable success over the last fifteen years. Since 1986, she
has had numerous solo and selected exhibitions in Sweden, Germany,
Finland, Belgium, USA, Senegal, Italy, Switzerland, France and
China, she has been featured in important art publications
world-wide and more than 250 of her paintings can be found in
private collections in many different countries.
We believe that
Canal has an extremely bright future and we are delighted to have
the opportunity to introduce her beautiful work to UK collectors. |
