Chris spent his
early years on the Sussex coast before continuing his education in
the inspiring landscape of Norfolk, with its oak lined lanes, flint
church towers and atmospheric coastline. The need to record and
respond creatively to his environment, first hand, began there, and
continues to this day.
Following a
Foundation course in Canterbury, it was up to Yorkshire for an
Honours Degree in Fine Art at Leeds College of Art. Three years
teaching funded an exploration of the U.S.A. where Chris discovered
the wonders of the south western mountains, coasts and deserts,
before finding employment in the Graphics industry on the East Coast
at Boston. An extended period in education followed his return
before he was able to devote himself to his passion for painting
completely.
Now he explores
the coastal landscape of England, France, and the American east
coast, with the occasional excursion further afield to places such
as India. Landscape and gardens feature, as well as the London city
and riverscape, recording first hand the interaction of the man-made
and the natural world. He paints entirely on site the year round in
all weathers - a challenging and very often uncomfortable
experience, but never dull! Chris hopes that working directly from
nature in this way lends his work an integrity and freshness that
can not be achieved by any other means.
Chris' work has been exhibited
extensively, including:
The Royal
Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition
The Royal Society of Marine Artists – Mall Galleries, London
The Discerning Eye – Mall Galleries
The Royal Society of British Artists - Mall Galleries
The New English Art Club - Mall Galleries
and he was awarded the Artist Purchase Prize Award at
the Patchings Art Festival in 2009. |
