Jane's current work is based upon travelling experiences that have
involved long periods in cars across several different countries.
Rather than reproduce the surrounding landscapes in a traditional
form, she represents the journeys in a less obvious way through the
various visuals clues along the road side. Road signs are
common features across all countries, sometimes to a universal
format other times uniquely peculiar to a location. Viewed as
glimpses, often subconsciously, during the course of a journey they
have a leveraged power of recall when played back as a part of a
whole story.
Over the past
five years as a painter Jane's work has tended to involve
multi-layering that has the effect of creating its own texture,
visual depth and contrast obscuring hidden images and inviting
discovery. Her enjoyment in creating the work comes from the
combination of hard-edged graphics with the painterly qualities that
gives a juxtaposition of order and mess. The occasional
misspellings and odd expressions lifted out of context give a
humorous edge. The challenge in doing this is to maintain the
senses of momentum and travel that evoke the memories of the
journey.
The
multi-layering technique adopted by Jane that give the pieces such
texture and depth is a painstaking process that results in each
painting taking several weeks to complete. There is obviously
therefore only a limited number that she can produce each year and
Enid Lawson gallery is delighted to have been given the opportunity
to exhibit this compelling work. |
