Jim Farrant was born in Taunton, England, in 1972, the son of well-known portraitist and figurative artist David Farrant. He completed a foundation course at Somerset College of Art and also attended Portsmouth College of Art, but was unhappy with the course and left to travel the world and find his own artistic voice. Returning to the UK from Australia and India, Jim initially painted abstract beachscapes, but then, influenced by the American Realists, changed direction with his painting, concentrating on colour and emotion, depicting human figures in warmly personal, everyday narrative situations. Having spent some time working in London, Jim has now returned to his native West Country. In addition to his continuing success with the figurative work, he has also now returned to landscapes, painting the beloved local rivers, countryside and flowers of Devon. Jim has a very special talent in the portrayal of light in his work. |
