Luella grew
up in the fifties in central London, living in a large
rambling flat that overlooked the tops of the trees in
Kensington Gardens. The park was her garden and her interest
in the interaction between people and nature may come from
that time. One of her earliest memories is of being taken to
the Tate Gallery by her mother (Mondrian was her favourite
artist), so perhaps it is not surprising that she decided
very early on to be a painter.
After
studying art at Hornsey, Byam Shaw and Goldsmiths College
London, Luella lectured in screenprinting in London and
Sussex for several years until she moved to Australia in the
1980’s where she was fortunate enough to spend six years
cruising the east coast on a steel ketch. The sunshine,
tropical foliage, flowers and birds that she saw there
inspired her to use a brighter palette and, although she has
been back in Europe for more than ten years, they continue
to have an effect on her work.
Luella has
exhibited widely, has work in many private collections
around the world and is currently working full-time at her
studio in Brighton.
