Born and raised on the Isle of
Portland, a place of stone quarries, open fields and high sea
cliffs, and graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art at Falmouth, Susan
Ashworth has continued to live on the South Coast, seeking out its
remoter corners for her work.
Both her landscapes and her still lifes
deal with the perception of objects in expanses of space. Whether
painting a lighthouse on a concrete jetty or fishbones on a plate,
Susan Ashworth’s interest is in creating a sense of distance. While
never losing spontaneity she achieves this through her chosen means
of subject matter, composition and paint handling, so that what we
find in her work are familiar objects estranged then seen afresh.
Susan's work has been exhibited to
great acclaim at galleries in London and throughout the South of
England and we warmly welcome her to Enid Lawson Gallery.
A vibrant life of feeling underpins
her work. There is always a melancholia here, as if a human presence
has just passed out of view, and alongside that a certain wild joy.
Above all, these are paintings that renew for us the surprise of
seeing. |
